When installing a CCTV system, one of the most overlooked considerations is where the control equipment will be housed and how much space is available.
Network Video Recorders (NVRs) are available in a wide range of sizes and configurations, but selecting the right equipment is only part of the process. Careful planning is required to ensure there is adequate access for future maintenance, suitable operating temperatures, sufficient ventilation, and enough capacity for future expansion.
The above photo shows a traditional full-height equipment cabinet. In this installation, the customer wanted not only the CCTV equipment neatly housed, but also other IT infrastructure professionally racked and organised. This approach provides excellent cable management, security, scalability, and ease of maintenance, making it ideal for larger systems or sites with multiple technologies.
The photo below demonstrates a completely different solution. Here, space was at a premium, so a wall-mounted vertical cabinet was installed. The cabinet can be pulled down to provide easy access to the recorder for servicing and maintenance. These compact solutions can even accommodate a small monitor internally if required. In this particular installation, however, the customer preferred to have the monitor permanently displayed elsewhere for continuous viewing.
Both installations achieve exactly the same objective – securely housing the CCTV equipment and providing reliable operation. The key difference is that each solution was selected to suit the environment and the customer’s requirements.
